Installing the CrashPlan PROe Desktop Client (Win/Mac/Linux)

CrashPlan is compatible with the three Major OSes:

  • Windows
  • OS X
  • Linux

After requesting access from the help center (see this link under the “Requesting Access” section) the first step is the same for all three platforms:

  • Got to https://crashplan.qatar.cmu.edu
  • Login with you Andrew ID and Password
  • And click on the corresponding icon to your operating system to download the correct client.

Windows

  1. Download the installer to your computer and click RUN once the download is complete.

  1. The installer will then unpack the necessary files and begin the installation process.

  1. Follow the installation wizard to the end, accepting the EULA as you go through.

  1. Once the installation is complete, the application will launch automatically, and you will be presented with a window to enter your details, ignore this page.

  1. As you have already requested access, and have an Andrew ID, click on “Existing Account” and enter your Andrew ID, Password and server address: crashplan.qatar.cmu.edu and click “Sign In”

  1. Once logged in, you computer will automatically start backing up, you do not need to keep the application open for it to backup, it will run in the background silently.

NOTE: The initial backup time may vary depending on the amount of data to be backed up and you network speed, it is recommended that the initial backup is done on campus to ensure a faster transfer rate.

 

OS X

  1. Download the DMG file to your computer and double-click once the download is complete to mount it on your desktop.

  1. Navigate and open the mounted disk on your desktop, then double-click on the “Install CrashPlanPROe”

  1. Follow the installation wizard to the end, accepting the EULA as you go through.During the process, your computer will require elevated privileges and will ask you for your username and password for the local computer.

NOTE: CrashPlan PROe version 3.6.2.1 and older require the OS X Java 6 (not Sun Java) to run.  For Mavericks and Earlier, Java will be installed automatically through Software Update, for Yosemite and later you will need to download OS X Java 6 Update 2014-001 manually fromhttp://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572. CrashPlanPROe version 3.6.3.x and later, Java comes packaged in the client and does not require any additional steps.

Linux

NOTE: You must be logged in as the user you want to backup.  For example, if your home directory is /home/jsmith and you are logged in as root, you would have to su – jsmith, jsmith must have sudo to install the client.  CrashPlan only backs up the home directory of the currently logged in user.  If your home directory is called root or admin because of the way you setup your system, then ignore this note and continue.

  1. Download the .tgz archive to your computer’s desktop.

  1. Navigate to the desktop with the following command:

Cd ~/Desktop/

  1. Extract the archive and change directories to the newly extracted CrashPlan folder with the following command:

tar -xzvf CrashPlanPROe_Linux.tgz

cd CrashPlanPROe-install/

sudo ./install.sh

  1. Follow the installation wizard to the end, accepting all defaults and the the EULA as you go through. DO NOT change any of the default locations.
