How should I connect to the CMUQ network?

You can connect to the CMUQ network by the following 3 ways:

• Wired network (Ethernet)
• Wi-Fi (CMUQ-SECURE, CMUQ-GUEST and eduroam)
• VPN connection

Wired network

Only CMU provided computers are authorized to connect to the wired network, users are strictly forbidden from connecting personal devices to the wired network unless instructed to do so by IT. This is a high-speed wired network (Ethernet) with speeds of up-to 1 Gigabits per second. This should be your choice of connection when you are working with and transferring files over the network.

Wi-Fi (CMUQ-SECURE, CMUQ-GUEST and eduroam)

We offer fast and reliable wireless network here at CMUQ. Here is a list of the main features of the Wi-Fi network connection:

• Covers more than 90% of the CMUQ building.
• Using the latest standards of 802.11ac.
• Broadcasting over 2 channels 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.
• Allowing access for affiliates and visitors, to connect to the internet and local services such as file and print services.

Should I connect to CMUQ-SECURE, CMUQ-GUEST or eduroam?

The table below highlights the 3 main sources of Wi-Fi connection:

CMUQ-SECURE	CMUQ-SECURE is the preferred WiFi network for CMU and CMUQ students/faculty/staff	Allows access to internet and all local services such as file shares and printing. Qatar affiliates can login by just entering their AndrewID without any prefixes or suffix. Pittsburgh visitors can login using ANDREW\AndrewID.
CMUQ-GUEST	CMUQ-GUEST is to be used by visitors that do not hold a valid Andrew ID or .edu email address.	Allows users to internet only Users must have a working mobile phone to receive an authorization code via SMS when setting up the connection.
eduroam	eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain Internet connectivity across campus and when visiting other participating institutions by simply opening their laptop.	To use eduroam, users must use their “.edu” email address to login.  For all CMU and CMUQ you must login using “AndrewID@andrew.cmu.edu”. Eduroam does not provide access to CMU services such as printing or file shares, it allow internet access only.
