The IT Service Desk is the frontline and first point of contact for all IT related incidents and requests.  The Service Desk offers professional technical support for all IT services, deployed hardware and peripherals.

In the incident of system failure, the Service Desk can quickly and efficiently get users back up and running, by replacing the affected system and restoring your data from backup.

Data Management

Your data is important to us, the Service Desk will help you make sure your data is being backed up, and in the incident of data loss, the Service Desk will assist with restoring the data, and should that fail, provide assistance in recovering the data.  To ensure that your data does not fall in the wrong hands, the Service Desk can scrub your drive clean, and in extreme cases, using a degausser to completely destroy the data.

Home Internet Support

CMU-Q Employees who are living in university provided housing (Excluding ECCH), can receive help setting up and troubleshooting their home internet connection if they face difficulty.  The Service Desk has partnered up with Family Computers to provide this service.  Requests for this service are done through the Service Desk.

Equipment Lending

CMU-Q Computing Services has a limited number of loaner IT Equipment. Loaners are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Unfortunately, the Computing Services cannot guarantee that a loaner will be available at all times. A waitlist will be kept when they are not readily available. Shortages most often occur during high-volume periods (such as start of school). Loaners could be offered to students doing research work only.

Exit Process

In coordination with the Human Resources Department (HR), the Service Desk assists employees with their End of Employment Process.  HR will notify the Service Desk of an employees End of Employment date.  In the case of contractors, the department head should notify IT.  The exit process consists of, the collection of IT equipment, scheduling the closure of the employees account and mailbox, as well as assisting the employee migrate his or her email and data.

Computer Deployment

IT provides all employees with an IT managed computer to enable employees to carry out their work efficiently.  By default IT provide PC-based notebooks running on the Microsoft Windows platform.  With business justification a Macintosh system can be provided.  Limited support for Linux systems is also available.

Office Setup

The IT Service Desk is responsible for setting up the IT equipment in all workspaces  for all new and exiting employees.  This effort is coordinated with the facilities management department, and requests for office setup is generally routed through them.  Direct requests can also be made by department heads and are subject to approvals.
